PRP, or platelet rich plasma, triggers a natural renewal of skin and hair. With hair restoration, PRP triggers the hair to stay in growth phase longer and creates less perifollicular inflammation due to the improved blood supply. Growth factors overcome hormonal and genetic signals that are responsible for alopecia. PRP hair restoration is a three-step medical treatment to stimulate hair growth by restoring vitality to hair follicles that are producing finer, thinner hairs, and going dormant. In this procedure, a small quantity of blood is drawn, processed, and injected into the scalp. This is performed by injecting micro droplets of 0.2ml PRP all throughout the scalp or targeted area. The recommended treatment timeline is a series of 3 treatments, once every 4 weeks. PRP hair restoration may be performed alone or in combination with other hair restoration treatments.

What is PRP hair restoration?

PRP hair restoration works by signaling dying or dormant hair follicles to heal and regenerate. A sample of your blood is used to create a concentration of the PRP growth factors. Once injected into your scalp, the follicles that are producing thinner, finer, hairs, are restored to health, and can produce thicker, healthy strands of hair.

Am I a good candidate?

You may be a good candidate for PRP hair restoration if you have areas of thinning hair on your scalp. The best candidates are men and women with mild, early-stage hair loss, who have healthy, balanced hormone levels and no major health issues.

What should I expect with PRP hair restoration?

A PRP hair restoration procedure has several steps:

  • Your blood is drawn (similar to when you have lab work)
  • Tubes of your blood are spun in a centrifuge to separate the red and white blood cells from the plasma; what is left is plasma with a higher than normal concentration of platelets
  • The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is drawn into syringes
  • The injection sites are cleaned with alcohol
  • PRP is injected into the scalp in the areas of thinning hair

Is there any recovery time after PRP hair restoration?

There is no downtime after PRP hair restoration. You may resume your usual activities immediately after the procedure. Unless the injection sites are particularly irritated or painful, you may wash your hair as usual.

What makes PRP injections beneficial for hair restoration?

PRP is loaded with growth factors (substances capable of stimulating cellular growth) that promote rapid angiogenesis (development of new blood vessels) and localized cell growth when injected into the scalp. Injections of platelet-rich plasma can make miniaturized hair follicles larger and healthier, for more robust hair growth.

How many injections are performed in a treatment session?

The number of PRP injections can vary from approximately 20–50, depending on the area of the scalp being treated.

What results can I expect?

At first, you can expect hair shedding to slow. New hair growth may be seen as early as two months after treatment, but usually takes longer—approximately five to eight months.
