One of the most obvious signs of aging is the hands. Age spots on the skin shows your years, and volume loss in the hands can lead to prominent tendons and ligaments, as well as visible veins. Our NYC hand rejuvenation treatments can restore the look of your hands, providing more youthful looking skin and taking years off their appearance.

What is hand rejuvenation?

Hand rejuvenation can bring back a youthful appearance to skeletal, aging hands, by restoring lost volume to the top of the hands and hiding the appearance of visible tendons and bone structure. It can be performed with fat transfer or dermal filler, leaving your hands looking years younger, plump and full.

Hand Rejuvenation in NYC

Am I a candidate for hand rejuvenation in NYC?

You may be a candidate for hand rejuvenation if lost volume has led to an aged appearance of the hands. Anyone who has veiny, hollow, wrinkled, or bony hands caused by loss of volume and wants a more youthful look may benefit from this procedure. Both fat transfer and injectable fillers are effective methods for restoring volume. Hand grafting with fat transfer injections provides the best overall rejuvenation, giving a durable, aesthetically pleasing result.

What should I expect in a hand rejuvenation procedure?

Dr. Ostad can perform Restylane Lyft injections or fat transfer to rejuvenate your hands, depending on your unique needs. Along with adding volume, we can also utilize laser treatments to further improve the appearance of your hands. We use either Fraxel or Picoway for brown spots, and Fraxel for texture. The lasers work by resurfacing the skin and decreasing brown spots. If you decide to use a Fraxel laser treatment for hand rejuvenation, a numbing agent will be used. With Picoway, you will feel a light warming sensation where the beam of light touches your skin.

Restylane Lyft hand rejuvenation

Restylane Lyft's active ingredient is hyrulonic acid, a naturally-occurring substance in our bodies which has the ability to minimize hollowness of the hands. The newest addition to the Restylane family, Lyft is the first hyaluronic acid filler to receive FDA approval for hand rejuvenation. In a quick, 15-minute procedure, you can have youthful hands again. After a topical numbing cream is applied, Dr. Ostad will precisely inject Restylane Lyft into different areas of each hand to create a rejuvenated appearance. Restylane is a non-invasive procedure that requires no downtime, and will not inhibit use or dexterity of your hands. Minor swelling and/or minimal bruising at the injection sites may occur.

Fat transfer hand rejuvenation

Fat transfer injections have been used in the past for facial rejuvenation. Now, this treatment is available for hand rejuvenation as well. In a fat grafting procedure, fat is harvested from an area with excess fat, often taken from the thighs. The fat is then transferred and injected into an area lacking volume such as the face or hands. This safe and easily tolerated transfer produces results that appear natural and youthful. By using the patient’s own fat rather than a synthetic filler, there is little chance of a negative reaction. The results are longer-lasting than when performed with dermal filler.

Dr. Ostad performs fat grafting procedures in his AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) certified office. The procedure is performed under anesthesia and involves three steps—harvesting, purifying, and injecting the fat. These steps can be repeated as necessary to achieve the desired contours and volume.

  • Harvesting: fat is extracted from the donor site using liposuction
  • Purifying: the cells are spun in a centrifuge to purify them for the transfer process
  • Injecting: fat is injected into the treatment site using a very fine, sterile needle

Before & After

What is the recovery like after hand rejuvenation?

Recovery after Restylane Lyft injections

You should be able to return to your normal activities within a few days of Restylane Lyft hand rejuvenation. You may experience some bruising and swelling. Avoid strenuous activities that stimulate blood flow for approximately 48 hours after the procedure. You can use makeup to cover the bruising until it subsides.

Recovery after fat transfer

The recovery period after fat transfer hand rejuvenation in NYC is brief. The hands may appear swollen, overfilled, or reddish during the first few weeks, but this will subside as the area heals. You can expect very little discomfort, minimal downtime, and, generally, no loss of functionality in the hands. As the hands are not immediately noticed by others, you may easily resume normal social activities.

FAQ

How long will my results last with hand rejuvenation?

Fat grafting hand rejuvenation results are long-lasting. The body may absorb some of the fat during the first few weeks after treatment, but a fat transfer resets the aging process, so the hands begin aging naturally again. Restylane Lyft results are immediate and will last from six months to one year.

Can Restylane Lyft be used to treat other areas than the hands?

Restylane Lyft is approved for treatment of age-related volume loss. It is the only dermal filler with several FDA-approved treatment areas: cheek augmentation, correcting moderate to severe facial wrinkling, lifting and contouring the mid-face, and treating nasolabial folds (smile lines).

Which treatment is best for my hand rejuvenation—Restylane Lyft or fat transfer?

If you are considering hand rejuvenation, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ostad. This is the best time to discuss your concerns and to determine the most appropriate procedure for your needs. The level of fat volume loss may lead you to fat transfer. This treatment is cost-effective, durable, long-lasting, and produces natural, youthful results. A fat transfer is often recommended for patients needing facial or hand rejuvenation due to hollows or lost volume. If you want natural, long-lasting results, fat transfer may be the right choice for more effective rejuvenation.

What causes aging of the hands?

As we age, we lose fat and volume in our faces and hands. Our faces can take on a sunken appearance while our hands may begin to show veins, bones, and tendons. The face and hands age at different rates, with the face typically aging faster. Even if your face looks young and refreshed, the hands will reveal your age—but you don’t have to accept it. Dr. Ostad offers fat grafting for hands to create a more youthful look overall.
