Each year, facial fillers have been gaining increased popularity amongst the younger population. Social media and popular culture have added to the chaos. Young adults look to emulate stars such as Kylie Jenner, Angelina Jolie, or Bella Hadid, by cosmetically enhancing their lips and cheeks using dermal fillers.
Dermal fillers are a non invasive procedure that provides long lasting results in a matter of minutes. These FDA-approved hyaluronic acid-based fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane correct facial asymmetry, while adding volume, lift, contour, and youthfulness to the face. These injections can also maintain facial rejuvenation by stimulating collagen, and preventing deep facial lines and wrinkles from becoming static.
However, as the desire for facial fillers begins to progress, we start to see an increased number of young adults hunting the internet for beauty bargains. Beauty bargain shoppers have their eye out for cosmetic procedures at a discounted price. Visiting an injector who is offering you a procedure at a low rate can pose serious risks and cause the patient alarming side effects.
When doing your research, there are certain factors you must keep an eye out for the following:
Google your doctor:
It is important to be injected by a skilled, board certified cosmetic dermatologist who is licensed in the U.S. There are low cost injectors who may be inexperienced, have received little to no training, and have poor injection technique, which leads to lumps, bleeding, bruising, and possible allergic reaction if a non-FDA injectable filler is used.
Know your fillers:
Properly examine the filler being used during your treatment. The injectable filler must meet the FDA’s guidelines. The box should be unopened, with the product brand and lot number labeled to ensure you are using a sterile needle. If you are not certain, always ask your provider.
Medical spas using injectables that have been purchased outside the U.S. are not as strictly regulated and are illegal. To ensure safe and optimal results, your product must be authentic, FDA-approved and it must be purchased by the physician directly from the distributor.
Keep in mind that some injectors are offering discounted rates on injectables because they may be diluting the product. This is a shady practice that not only minimizes the effectiveness, but can also increase the possibility of infection. Diluted injectables that are mixed with saline can also cause the formation of hard lumps at the injection site.
Being injected by a discounted, unknown product can run the following risks:
