Liposuction

With the help of Liposuction, Dr. Ariel Ostad can eliminate extra fat in most problem areas of your body. Fat cells are removed with a high-powered vacuum through tiny incisions made in the selected areas, improving their contour after recovery.

Initially this procedure was used for removing excess fat from the torso and thighs. Lately, this type of liposuction is applied to many areas of the body. Dr. Ostad has successfully improved lower face and neck contours by liposuction of patients’ upper neck area.

Diet and heredity are the main factors that control the body’s fat distribution. Heredity plays an important role in forming the individual’s fat tissue features and the overall number of fat cells. Diet can only make your fat cells “bigger” or “smaller” by filling or emptying their fat, but it does not affect their number in your body as they perform as reservoirs of energy supply.

The general condition of your skin, age, weight and other factors will influence your long-term results following a liposuction procedure. During your appointment, Dr. Ostad will discuss with you how these factors relate to you in particular. Liposuction is not designed as a means of weight control or as a substitute for regular exercise and a balanced diet. If you expect to lose substantial amount of weight by undergoing liposuction, you may need to consider more invasive surgical options.

The procedure is specifically designed to provide permanent results and is used to reduce local fat in the buttocks, waist, stomach, arms, neck, and chin.

Skin Elasticity

Good skin elasticity is one of the most important factors in terms of surgical outcomes. The younger the patient, the better the results of liposuction. As we age, our skin elasticity starts to deplete. However, even through middle age, some elasticity is retained. The skin always shrinks to adjust to the new decreased volume of fat and tissue after a liposuction is performed.

Cellulite

Cellulite is structural change in subcutaneous layer resulting in abnormality of microcirculation and lymphatic outflow. It can be characterized as a stagnation process of fat tissue, which leads to its dystrophy. Liposuction does not treat cellulite; however, the excess fat is eliminated and the body contour is reduced.

Loose Skin and Musculature

Due to weak musculature and loose skin, some patients may need to undergo abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or thigh lifts after a liposuction procedure. During the initial consultation with Dr. Ostad, your skin will be evaluated, and he will check whether additional procedures would be beneficial.

Permanency of Results

After puberty, we have a fixed number of fat cells; our weight changes depending on the amount of fat in these cells. The liposuction procedure provides immediate results, as fat cells are permanently removed.

Duration of the Procedure

The surgery can last thirty minutes to two hours, depending on the volume of fat to be removed.

What to Expect After Liposuction?

You will have bandages over the incision sites. A special garment is typically worn immediately after the surgery for two to three weeks. You may remove your supportive garment to wash it or when you take a shower starting 24 hours after the procedure.

Normally following your liposuction, you will experience a little pain, and it may be recommended to take Extra Strength Tylenol. Discomfort is usually minor both during the procedure and throughout your recovery.

You Can Return to Work in a Few Days

Swelling may also occur in the treated areas for the first week following the procedure. If you have had liposuction, you may appear to look larger than you were pre-operatively, and you will notice that your clothes are tight. The swelling begins to significantly subside by the end of the first week after surgery, and during the second week, the treated areas will decrease to become smaller than they were before. The final results of liposuction may not be noticeable until six months after procedure.

Before and After Photos

At the preoperative visit, your private preoperative photographs of problem areas will be taken. The images are an important part of keeping a detailed patient record. They allow Dr. Ostad to observe problem areas in every detail and help greatly during the planning stages and during the procedure. Postoperative images are generally taken six months after your procedure.

Scarring

Scars from the liposuction procedure are typically no more than an inch in length. They are hidden in the natural lines and creases of your skin to make them as unnoticeable as possible. Usually the scars will be red or pigmented for six months, but they will become less apparent gradually after one year. The scars are rarely problematic. However, the final appearance of scars is not totally predictable.

Complications and Unwanted Results

Serious complications from liposuction are very rare. Bruising in all patients usually resolves in three to six weeks. You may also expect some numbness or reduced sensation in the area that was treated.

One of the main goals is to reach adequate symmetry, but sometimes minor side-to-side differences can take place. That is why an additional fat removal operation is recommended to five percent of all patients.

There are sometimes articles in the press or online about terrible liposuction results. Dr. Ostad has made a thorough investigation of all serious liposuction complications and/or deaths associated with the procedure. He has come to the conclusion that all of those cases were the results of unqualified practitioners’ actions or additional procedures done simultaneously.

Patients are overwhelmingly happy with the results. Liposuction is as safe as any other cosmetic procedure. In his years of practice, Dr. Ostad has never seen a serious complication from liposuction.
