As we age, our eyelids stretch and the muscles that support them begin to weaken. Excess fat may accumulate above and below our eyelids, causing droopy upper lids, bags under the eyes, and sagging eyebrows. Not only can these physical changes make us look significantly older, but they can also impair our peripheral vision and even result in vision complications such as astigmatism. As such, many people seek to correct these signs of aging not only for aesthetic reasons, but also so they can continue to see and function normally. Dr. Ariel Ostad, a highly experienced board-certified dermatologist in New York, offers two types of treatments for droopy eyelids in his practice. Based on the extent of correction required, Dr. Ostad will advise you on which treatment, Ultherapy® or blepharoplasty, would be right for you.
Ultherapy® is a non-invasive technique for tightening the skin. It can be used anywhere on the face and body, including around the delicate eye area. Ultherapy® is typically used to lift the brow line slightly, thus reducing sagging around the eyelids. The treatment utilizes ultrasound technology to stimulate the body to produce new collagen, which results in lifted and tightened skin. Ultherapy® is a quick treatment that requires no downtime. Most patients report only mild discomfort while receiving the treatment. Patients typically need one to two treatments to see results, and touch ups can be performed every few years as desired. Ultherapy® is a great option for those wishing to see fast results without undergoing surgery. Ultherapy® is able to effectively improve moderate eyelid sagging and bagginess under the eyes.
For more advanced cases of eyelid droopiness and bags under the eyes, Dr. Ostad may suggest that you undergo blepharoplasty, a surgical procedure that modifies the eyelids by removing or repositioning excess tissue. blepharoplasty is a very effective way of improving the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. Dr. Ostad will help you decide whether changes should be made to one or both parts of your eye. Before beginning the procedure, the doctor will administer an intravenous or general anesthetic, based on what is best for you. Next, the doctor will carefully create incisions on your eyelid and/or below your eye, following the natural structure of your eyes so the incision will be well concealed. Once the incisions are made, the doctor will remove and reposition excess fat and skin to improve your appearance. Musculature and tendons may be tightened as well. Afterwards, the doctor will close the eyelid incisions using sutures or medical adhesive. Recovery time is based on the extent of correction required. Bruising and swelling is to be expected, but it will subside over time. After the swelling subsides, a smooth, well-defined eyelid region will be revealed. Your eye area will appear brighter, younger, and rejuvenated.
Ultherapy® and blepharoplasty are two very different procedure types which offer varying degrees of eyelid correction and enhancement to patients with sagging eyelids. Dr. Ostad will be able to recommend which procedure will be most beneficial to you after examining your eyes and reviewing your medical history. If sagging eyelids and bags under your eyes have become bothersome or physically unappealing to you, do not hesitate to consult with Dr. Ostad to explore your options.
